Knowing that our bodies are made of 70% water and that vibrations travel 4 times faster in water, it’s not a far fetched idea that sending vibrations through our bodies could be a powerful therapy. Using sound as a way to heal physical bodies, mental states and spiritual connectivity are often viewed as a “New Age” practice, but it’s one of the oldest healing modalities having been used for thousands of years. It’s benefits have withstood the test of time and has even made it’s way into modern medicine with the use of ultrasound technology.

Sound Bath

A Sound bath, in short, is a meditation where people are bathed in sound waves. This can be from instruments, singing bowls or even voices. It is not a song or chant. It’s purpose is to removed blocks and to ease minds and bodies into a meditative state. There is nothing for the recipient to do but lay down (supported if necessary) and allow the waves to roll over you.

The benefits of sound bath are numerous. It aids in relaxation firstly. The tones and frequencies allow your mind, and in response, your body, to relax and enter a meditative state. It clears your energy field and increases a sense of well being. Pain can be eased as it may be related to blocked energy flow.

Binaural Beats

Binaural Beats are a particular sound therapy where two different audio frequencies are played, one for each ear, and the brain creates a third. This is called the Frequency Follow effect and it happens when the brain follows the frequency and enters a meditative or altered state.
There are five frequency ranges, Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Depending on the range of frequency, you can see increased focus, better memory, stress reduction, increased energy, just to name a few.

Tuning Fork Therapy

Holding a tuning fork and activating the vibration will send ripples traveling through your body releasing the flow of energy, also known as Qi. Chinese medicine and culture believe that everything is made of Qi. It is our life force flowing through everything. Holding a tuning fork in your hands or in contact with an area of the body that is feeling pain or experiencing disease can help to ”shake it out” through ripples created by the forks.

Singing Bowls

Singing bowl therapists play a series of particular sounds to emit frequencies used to heal various conditions. The bowls that they play are usually made of quartz, which is known to have a memory and helpful healing powers of it’s own.

There are other healing modalities based in sound, but these give you a taste of what is possible.
